Veronik Avery

Véronik Avery is the owner of St-Denis Yarns and the author of  'Knitting Classic Style and 'Knitting 24/7' (STC).  Her work has  appeared in the books Weekend Knittting, Handknit Holidays, Wrap  Style, Lace Style, Bag Style, Color Style, Simple Style and Knitting  Socks with Hand Painted Yarns, the magazines Interweave Knits, Vogue  Knitting and Woman's Day, and on the online site Knitty. She lives in  Montreal with her husband and daughter.

Grading knitting patterns/Custom fitting approaches

Anyone wishing to begin a career in knitting design needs to know how to grade patterns, that is, needs to know how to write a pattern in several sizes. In the first half of this class, you will learn how to generate a range of sizes from your initial sample and you will then use this knowledge to custom fit patterns in the second half of the class.

When: Tuesday, 9.30 - 5.00

Level: intermediate

Class Skills: sweater knitting experience, familiarity with basic garment shapes.

Skills you’ll learn: basic grading and custom fitting.

Cost: £80

Class Length: 6 hours

Bring with you: sweater or similar garment that fits you well, calculator, note pad, pen and pencils etc.

The working swatch - planning for optimal finishing

In the enthusiasm to begin a new project, it may be tempting to forgo swatching. However, the swatch can do much more than inform you whether your gauge is right – it can act as a testing ground, allowing you to test techniques that will make your project the best looking it can be. In addition, we will discuss how to use it as the basis of calculations to adjust the length of garment pieces – both shapes and unshaped.

When: Wednesday, 9.30 - 12.30

Level: advanced beginner

Class Skills: Basic knit stitches

Skills you’ll learn: several buttonholes, short rowing and some knitter’s math for some simple custom-fitting.

Cost: £40

Class Length: 3 hours

Homework: TK

Bring with you:  4mm (US 6) size needles, note pad and pen.

Project Class: Short Row Beret (Knit Camp exclusive pattern)

Class description: Short row are usually reserved for shaping garments by adding length in controlled areas, but they can also be used decoratively. Join me in knitting this new pattern – the yarn and pattern will be supplied – where we’ll both knit and discuss the possibilities of short rows for decorative uses.

When: Thursday, 9.30 - 12.30

Level: advanced beginner

Class Skills: knitting and purling.

Skills you’ll learn: shaping and decorating with short rows.

Cost: £40

Class Length: 3 hours

Homework: none.

Bring with you: 5mm (US8) needles and stitch markers.

Knitted Quilts

Modular knitting is a fun way to begin exploring working with colour, as only one colour is used at a time. With it, you can knit Patchwork quilts by planning the pieces you’ll knit and the order you’ll knit them in. Together, we’ll examine how geometric patchwork quilts can be translated into knitting projects while we work on a square.

When: Thursday, 2.00 - 5.00

Level: advanced beginner

Class Skills: knitting and purling, increasing and decreasing

Skills you’ll learn: modular knitting, basic design, yarn calculations.

Cost: £40 (includes yarn)

Class Length: 3 hours

Bring with you: 4mm (US 6) knitting needles and some colourful images that inspire you, such as magazine clippings of interior design, fashion and/or art.

Minimum number of students for class to run: 12 Maximum number of students: 16

Beyond vertical cables

Cables need not always follow the same course: hem to shoulder in straight lines. They can be used horizontally, diagonally as well as used to highlight and flatter. In this class, we will discuss different approaches to redirect cables and how varying their position can flatter the figure.

When: Friday, 9.30 - 12.30

Level: Intermediate

Class Skills: Comfortable with all basic knit stitches and experience of cabling

Cost: £40 (includes yarn)

Class Length: 3 hours
